Clarewood House is located just west of Loop 610, about 2 miles from The Galleria’s luxury stores and a mile or so east of Houston’s extensive Chinatown filled with fresh-food markets, import shops, and restaurants. Residents can transition between independent apartment living, assisted living with all meals prepared and 24-hour available help, skilled nursing and rehabilitation on-site, and a special care unit for dementia patients. The chapel holds interdenominational weekly services, and residents have the option to take part in bible study groups on site.

Holly Hall in south central Houston is convenient to the Texas Medical Center hospital complex, Hermann Park, and the city’s renowned Museum District. Holly Hall is the oldest retirement community in Houston but offers up-to-date amenities such as computer-literacy classes, gated entry and round-the-clock security service, customized fitness programs, and elegantly appointed suites, apartments, and cottages.

In addition to independent and assisted living, Holly Hall offers skilled nursing in private suites in the Healthcare Center. Rehabilitation programs are also available, including speech, physical, and occupational therapy. Holly Hall also offers home care services for seniors who want some assistance while staying in their own homes. Options include daily visits, round the clock care, respite care, and transportation to errands and appointments, plus a long list of other available services.

Seniors living in or near Willowbrook on Houston’s northwest side can take advantage of wellness seminars, library resources, and health classes offered by Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, part of the citywide Houston Methodist network. The hospital also offers health screenings and sells health equipment for patients with hearing impairments, mobility issues, and other home health needs.

In La Porte on the edge of Trinity Bay, Methodist Retirement Communities runs two affordable housing communities for seniors: Bayview Apartments and Oakview Apartments. These 1- and 2-bedroom apartments are available for seniors age 62 and older with qualifying incomes. Both complexes are small-pet friendly, offer weekly worship services, and offer social gatherings and shopping trips for residents.

More options on the way

Methodist Retirement Communities is currently building its newest senior community, The Crossings in League City, about halfway between Houston and Galveston. As a Life Care continuing care community, The Crossings provides fixed-rate monthly fees for its residents with minimal increases for skilled nursing and memory care services. That protects residents from financial shocks even if more specialized care is needed later in life.

Among the services planned for Crossings’ independent living residents are comprehensive home maintenance, housekeeping, laundry and dining service options, regular transportation service, and on-call assistance around the clock. Assisted living, licensed memory care, and skilled nursing services will all be available onsite.
