Home help, emergency aid, and case management in L.A.

Catholic Charities of Los Angeles provides a web of social services across an 8,500 square-mile area. Among its programs are two designed to help seniors live better at home. The Older Adult Services and Intervention System (OASIS) serves several hundred LA-area seniors each year with financial assistance, case management services, errands, and companionship. Nazareth House of Los Angeles has provided affordable Los Angeles assisted living since 1935. The 5-acre campus in Cheviot Hills is in the early part of a multi-stage renovation project to expand and upgrade its housing. Amenities include twice-daily celebrations of Mass in the on-site chapel, opportunities to seek guidance from retired clergy and Sisters of Nazareth who also live on campus, and access to the onsite Care Center when skilled nursing help is needed. Regular excursions for shopping, arts performances, and cultural events connect residents with LA life.

A few miles to the east of Nazareth house, St. John of God Retirement and Care Center offers a full range of senior living options. St. John of God is a SeniorAdvisor.com Best of Assisted Living 2015 award-winner, based on families’ reviews. The center’s residential buildings offer services tailored to each type of senior living:

The St. John Grande building provides independent living in elegant Spanish colonial style. Residents can enjoy wellness center workouts, a daily meal in the dining room, kitchenettes in each apartment, and underground parking.

Assisted living in the St. Richard Pampuri building features three restaurant-style meals daily, round the clock clinic services, and indoor pool access.

Memory care in the St. Benedict Menni building includes help with activities of daily living, a safe and secure garden for outdoor enjoyment, and specialized wellness and recreational activities.

St. John’s Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center offers long- and short-term nursing care, physical therapy, and individualized nutritional plans.

Daily chapel services are open to all residents. And in true Los Angeles style, St. John’s residents can often see television and movie crews filming at the historic Villa Maria House on campus.

Whether you have a home in LA that you’d like to stay in, or you’re looking for a community to be part of, Los Angeles has a wealth of Catholic senior living options.
