Pet-Friendly Senior Living in Minneapolis

Pet-Friendly Senior Living in Minneapolis

Minneapolis is one of the Midwest’s star metropolises, beloved for its many lakes, its four-seasons climate, and the warm welcome it extends to pets. Forbes lists Minneapolis as one of the best cities in the country for dog lovers. With roomy dog parks, hundreds of dog-friendly dining options, and stores that welcome your 4-legged friends, it’s only natural that Minneapolis is also home to more than 200 pet-friendly senior communities. The “City of Lakes” is also a great city for dogs.

Pup-friendly Minneapolis parks

As part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area along with St. Paul, Minneapolis offers lots of places to explore outdoors. There are 8 dog parks in the city, including Minnehaha Park along the Mississippi River, which has wooded trails, a 53-foot waterfall, and an off-leash area for dogs at the park’s south end. Bring a towel for your dog and shoes that can stand a little mud—the river water is just too tempting for most pups to resist. Riverside, another park along the Mississippi, features a completely fenced off-leash area for those days when you want everyone to stay dry.

Go fetch at Minneapolis’ pet-friendly retail shops

Minneapolis has lots of canine-friendly shops, too, from Settergren Ace Hardware, which has been locally owned for more than a century, to the sleek Apple retail outlet in Uptown. But perhaps the best-known destination in town for shoppers with dogs is Birchbark Books. It’s an independent shop owned by novelist and National Book Award winner Louise Erdrich.

And when Fido has a shopping list of his own, there are plenty of boutiques to check out together. Woody’s Pet Food Deli is the city’s most popular specialty pet food store, with raw diet staples for cats and dogs. Uptown, you can find premium grooming supplies, bedding, and more for dogs, cats, and small animals at Urban Tails. Another local boutique, Bone Adventure, has 4 locations across the city.

Tasty treats for you and your pet

After some time spent playing outdoors and shopping, you and your dog could find your stomachs growling. Luckily for both of you, there are hundreds of restaurants, bistros, and diners in Minneapolis that welcome dogs. One of the most popular spots for breakfast and brunch is the eclectic Tilia, near Lake Harriet in the Linden Hills neighborhood. South of Lake Harriett is Pizzeria Lola, named after the owner’s dog and known for its flavorful fusion creations such as Korean BBQ pizza and Hatch chile pies.

Pet-friendly places to call home

In keeping with the city’s reputation, there are plenty of pet-friendly senior communities in Minneapolis, in urban neighborhoods and suburban settings. For example, Loren on Park offers pet-friendly independent living and senior apartments in Midtown, just a short drive from Birchbark Books and from Lakes Harriet and Calhoun. Other communities are farther away from the urban core and offer pet-friendly continuity of care, such as Summit Place Senior Campus, which offers independent and assisted living options along with specialized memory care. Explore your options and get ready to explore Minneapolis with your pet.
