Mobility Devices for Seniors

Mobility Devices for Seniors

Finding the right type of mobility for your needs doesn’t have to feel like an overwhelming process. With a few helpful hints and tricks, this guide will help you get on your way to finding independence through mobility again.

First, consider where you’ll be using the device the most. Will it be primarily at home? Do you need help in getting from your bedroom to the bathroom during the night? You may not need a fancy scooter for that. You may just want a simple cane that can help you keep your balance while you’re walking. Are you an avid walker and only need help going up hills to ensure that you don’t slip? Perhaps a recent knee or hip surgery is causing you to look at other options for your safety and an in-home power chair would be a better option.

The below list shows the top three mobility devices that are definitely worth looking at and why seniors love them:

1. Hugo Mobility Quadpod Offset Cane with Ultra Stable Cane Tip

Hugo Mobility Quadpod Offset Cane with Ultra Stable Cane Tip, EbonyWhy we like it: Adjustable height for users 5’ to 6.5’ tall. Lightweight. Ergonomic and cushioned handle. Cane stands on its own with its wide base. Can be purchased on Amazon for only $19.99. Users love the sturdiness of the device and how it can be easily adjusted. Although this cane does not fold, it definitely is a great choice for added stability making it easier to get around. Users also commented that this is a great alternative to the heavy, quad canes that are in the market. Did we mention it stands on its own? That is awesome.

2. Drive Medical Fly Lite Ultra Lightweight Aluminum Transport Chair

Drive Medical Fly Lite Ultra Lightweight Aluminum Transport ChairIf you’ve been noticing that it takes you longer to get from your car to the doctor’s office you may want to consider looking at foldable wheelchairs. This ultra light wheelchair folds up neatly and weighs only 15lbs making it a cinch to get in and out of the car. Why we like it: Strong, lightweight aluminum with a sturdy design. Minimal effort required. Can be purchased online for about $179.00 or in-store. Users love how convenient it is to use and how comfortable it is to push. This wheelchair is also a great alternative for seniors who are easily fatigued while walking.

3. EZ Lite Cruiser Personal Mobility Aid

EZ Lite Cruiser Personal Mobility Aid
This powerful cruiser is gaining in popularity with more and more seniors looking to purchase lighter weight electric wheelchairs. Why we like it: Only 50 pounds with the battery. One no longer needs to install a lift to the car or SUV to get around in a cruiser. Helpful trick: you can place the battery in the car first and then the cruiser to help reduce the weight. Can go up to 12.5 miles on a single charge. The dimensions when it is folded are only 28.5 in. x 22.4 in. x 12.25 in. (or 72.4 cm. x 56.9 cm. x 31.1 cm.). That is practically the size of a carry on bag! This device costs around $2,400 and is well worth the investment. Users love that it is a cross between a scooter and a power chair, this cruiser can easily go right up to a table in a restaurant. No need to transfer from one chair to the other. It is also good for use at home and turns well in tighter corners.

Finding the right mobility for your needs is a decision that takes time to research and look into. With today’s advances in technology, it’s great to see more options at price points everyone can afford.

Folding power wheelchairs like this one can make such a difference. I provide power wheelchairs to patients as an ATP and I wish more insurance companies would cover these types of mobility devices. Many people who need and benefit from power wheelchairs, would like to be able to take them with them other places than just home. It would benefit them socially, mentally, and even physically if they could get out and about with the rest of the population. Unfortunately, insurance companies, especially the government funded ones, don’t seem to agree. Thanks for bringing attention to these important mobility aids.
