Pet-Friendly Senior Living in San Diego

Pet-Friendly Senior Living in San Diego CA

San Diego’s sunny days, miles of beaches, and moderate climate are all reasons it’s a popular retirement destination – and not just for humans. San Diego is ranked among the most dog-friendly cities in the nation, according to Forbes, because the sunshine, sand, and surf are just as appealing to pets as to people. The historic city offers pet-friendly dining, shopping, and sightseeing to keep everyone entertained. There are also more than 140 pet-friendly senior communities in San Diego, making it easy to find a home near the places you and your pet visit most often.

Dog-friendly dining options abound in San Diego

No matter what you and your furry friend are craving, you can probably enjoy it together in San Diego. There are more than 150 restaurants that welcome dogs in and around the city, representing a broad range of culinary styles. Some of the most popular dine-out options for people and pets are dinner and drinks at Sally & Henry’s Doghouse Bar & Grill, brunch at The Patio on Lamont Street, and lunch at Bull’s Smokin’ BBQ, where locals swear by the ribs and brisket while their dogs go for the beef bones that Bull’s serves up for free.

Strolling and sightseeing in San Diego

Seaport Village offers seaside shopping, dining, and people- and pet-watching. With more than 50 shops plus restaurants and a carousel, it’s a popular place to spend a lazy day.

Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park is a pet-friendly place to watch local artists at work and maybe get some creative inspiration of your own. More than 200 artisans use the studio space, which is open to the public, including on-leash dogs, for free almost every day of the year.

Plenty of places to run and play in San Diego

Active types, both human and canine, will enjoy exploring the city’s many dog parks, dog-friendly beaches, and park trails. The Original Dog Beach at Ocean Beach gives pups plenty of room to frolic in the surf, followed by a trip to the nearby Dog Wash for a quick rinse on the way home. Fiesta Island in Mission Bay is another popular hangout for hounds and their humans.

When you don’t want to get wet, Nate’s Point in Balboa Park offers off-leash fun in one of San Diego’s most popular outdoor settings. There are more than a dozen other off-leash parks around the city. Outside of town you’ll find several dogs-welcome trails in area canyons and natural areas, including Barker Valley Trail in the Cleveland National Forest and the Cowles Mountain Trail.

Lots of senior living options for San Diego pet owners

Although the shore and the mountains are on opposite sides of town, they’re easy enough to get to from most parts of the city. For example, pet-friendly independent and assisted living center Atria Collwood is located in Mid City, about a 15-minute drive from both Ocean Beach and Cowles Mountain. For people who want to live even closer to San Diego’s major attractions, senior communities like Merrill Gardens at Bankers Hill offer easy access to beaches and to Balboa Park. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll and window shopping, a run in the surf, or lunch with friends, you and your pet have lots of choices in Diego.
