Researchers found that overall dementia rates in the late 1970s and early 1980s were 3.6%; since the late 2000\u2019s the rate hovers around 2%. At the beginning of the study period, the average age at which dementia patients received their diagnosis was 80. Today, the average age at diagnosis is 85. The findings were <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><strong><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1504327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a><\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dementia remains a major health issue, due to the nature of the disease, the increasing number of people living long enough to be at risk, and the cost and complexity of dementia care. But scientists and doctors are sifting through the new report for clues to help patients and future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Who participated in the study?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people studied were all participants in the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.framinghamheartstudy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Framingham Heart Study<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a group of 5,000 women and men from the Boston exurb of Framingham, Massachusetts, who\u2019ve been in the study since 1975. As the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/decline-in-dementia-rate-offers-cautious-hope-201603099251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Medical School blog<\/a> <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">points out<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Framingham study subjects are predominately middle-class whites, so it\u2019s not certain how relevant the findings are to people outside that demographic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s causing the decline?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers said not all the factors related to the drop have been pinpointed. But prevention and treatment for heart disease and strokes have improved over the last few decades. Some researchers and public health experts think those improvements drove the decline in dementia cases, because there was a decrease in people with cardiovascular disease over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers also found that declines were only seen among people who had at least a high-school level of education. That corresponds to other studies that have found a link between more education, more challenging careers, and less incidence of dementia. Scientists think that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be due<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the development of \u201c<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23079557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cognitive reserve<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d an increase in brain resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Which type of dementia declined most?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2016\/02\/10\/study-finds-dementia-rates-decline\/80016390\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USA Today<\/a><\/i><\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that vascular dementia declined most during the time periods studied. It\u2019s the 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most prevalent type of dementia, according to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, and can be caused by sudden events like stroke as well as by chronic problems like hardening of the arteries that affect blood flow to the brain. There was a decline in Alzheimer\u2019s disease that may or may not be related to improved cardiovascular health; researchers said it could have been a fluke. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How can you reduce your risk of dementia?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important step you can take, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Harvard Medical School blog, is to <strong>take care of your heart<\/strong>. Eat a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/why-the-mediterranean-diet-in-style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">healthy Mediterranean-style diet<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise 5 days each week, and make time to relax and socialize. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other things you can do to protect your brain are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep learning. The researchers working on this study found a correlation between <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/how-can-you-reduce-your-dementia-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more education and lower dementia rates<\/a><\/strong>. In addition, others have found that being bilingual can delay the onset of dementia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/mental-health-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Safeguard your mental health<\/strong><\/a> and seek treatment if you suspect you may be depressed, because <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Health_News\/2016\/03\/24\/Worsening-depression-may-double-the-risk-for-dementia\/8181458826656\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other recent research<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found a link between worsening depression and elevated dementia risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helmet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you bike, ski, skate, or play contact sports, to prevent head injuries that can contribute to dementia or traumatic brain injury.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, see a doctor if you or your family members notice <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/memory-loss-vs-dementia-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">possible signs of dementia<\/a><\/strong>.
