That\u2019s a problem for all pain sufferers, but it\u2019s even worse for seniors with advanced Alzheimer\u2019s or other cognitive and speech problems. The NIH says chronic pain rates among seniors living in long term care facilities can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/magazine\/issues\/fall11\/articles\/fall11pg15.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>as high as 85<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/magazine\/issues\/fall11\/articles\/fall11pg15.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>%<\/strong><\/a>. Dementia patients often can\u2019t say when they\u2019re in pain. Instead, they may react to pain by lashing out. If you suspect your loved one is suffering from untreated or undertreated pain, here are steps to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is pain the cause of the aggressive behavior?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, focus on safety. The physical safety of your loved one, yourself, and his or her other caregivers is paramount. Talk to your loved one\u2019s doctor about nonmedical options, such as removing dangerous objects or weapons from the home, and medical options, such as time-limited use of sedatives when the patient is at risk of self-harm or hurting someone else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, work with your loved one\u2019s caregivers and doctors to see if undiagnosed or undertreated pain might be the cause of the acting out. Writing in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author Paula Span related the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/12\/when-aggression-follows-dementia\/?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>story<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/12\/when-aggression-follows-dementia\/?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> of a dementia patient<\/strong><\/a> who tore a door from its hinges before doctors realized he was in pain because of a urinary tract infection and treated him for it. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/utis-in-the-elderly\/\" target=\"_blank\">Urinary tract infections are common in seniors<\/a><\/strong>, and they can cause confusion\u2014another potential cause of aggression\u2014as well as severe pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain is another common condition, especially among older adults with arthritis and those who have broken a hip or had joint surgery. Geriatrician Elizabeth Eckstrom, writing in <\/span><strong><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-gift-of-caring\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Gift of Caring<\/a><\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recommends making a list of your loved one\u2019s pain history for to review with his or her doctor and caregivers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also advises looking out for new causes of pain\u2014a sinus or ear infection, a cut or scrape, gum irritation, or another potential source of discomfort that needs treatment. If pain is the cause of your loved one\u2019s agitation, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Eckstrom notes that in addition to over-the-counter and prescription pain medications, many patients experience less pain with regular massage therapy, hot water bottles for sore joints, help with proper posture, and regular exercise of some kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your loved one can\u2019t tell you what\u2019s going on, watch for physical cues that he or she may be hurting. \u00a0Note his or her reaction to transitions like moving from chair to bed, eating, and walking around. You may notice expressions, movements or early signs of agitation that can help you home in on the source of pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>When you\u2019ve tried pain treatments and the behavior remains<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for other causes of agitation. According to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alz.org\/care\/alzheimers-dementia-aggression-anger.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a><\/strong>, these may <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clutter in the person\u2019s living area, medication interactions or side effects, loud or irritating noises, and an irregular or confusing daily routine.
