5 Steps to Make Moving Elderly Parents to\u00a0Senior Living Easier<\/h1>\n

When it\u2019s time for a senior parent to move out of their home and into senior care, you have to deal with both the emotional difficulty of leaving behind a familiar home and the difficulties of moving.\u00a0Senior living is often the best choice for seniors who can\u2019t fully take care of themselves and for the family members who can\u2019t spend the necessary time providing their care. Nonetheless, it\u2019s a difficult choice to make and can be a hard process to get through.\"5<\/span><\/p>\n

We can\u2019t offer you anything that will make the process of moving your elderly parents to senior living painless, but we can offer a few tips to make it a little easier on everyone:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Enlist family and friends or hire movers to help.<\/h3>\n

Don\u2019t try to do everything yourself, unless you have enough helpful family and friends to make the move fairly quick. Hiring movers can often make the task much easier for an affordable price. <\/span><\/p>\n

The less time you spend putting needless effort into boxing everything up, carrying heavy boxes from one place to another and then unpacking things, the more time your parents will have for starting to get settled in their new home.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Find the right senior living community.<\/h3>\n

You need to work\u00a0with your parents on finding the\u00a0senior living community that meets their needs and satisfies their main desires.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sit down and work out a list of the things you know are requirements and those things that should be considered \u201cnice to\u00a0have.\u201d You can\u00a0<\/span>search the senior living<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>residences\u00a0in your area limiting your options based on the factors most important to your parents. Look at the pictures. Read the reviews. Take the time to really gain a picture of what your best options are. Then go and visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Have the discussion early, if possible.<\/h3>\n

This isn\u2019t a decision you want to spring on your parents. The ideal scenario would involve\u00a0<\/span>discussing the possibility of senior living<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0long before your loved one actually needs it, so they\u2019ll have an easier time accepting it as a possibility and understanding why it\u2019s necessary when the time comes.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re reading this at a point where it\u2019s too late for that, then you want to at least broach the topic in a way that\u2019s respectful. Nobody wants to feel like they\u2019ve lost their freedom and independence.\u00a0<\/span>If nothing you say can get them to budge on the idea, there may be a point where you have to simply tell them it\u2019s the only way, but make a real effort to make the case in an empathetic manner that frames it in terms of their benefits as well as its necessity.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Make sure their community stays close.<\/h3>\n

That means you, your other family members and their close friends all have a job to do. A move to senior living should <\/span>not<\/span> mean seeing less of your loved ones. It may take a little extra effort for people to make regular visits, especially if the location of the residence means they\u2019re further away, but it\u2019s crucial that you all do your part. <\/span><\/p>\n

Loneliness is dangerous for seniors<\/a><\/strong>, not to mention deeply unpleasant to experience while trying to transition to a new home and lifestyle. It\u2019s part of your job as a family to keep it from creeping in.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Minimize belongings.<\/h3>\n

The space your parent will have in their\u00a0senior living residence will inevitably be much smaller than the space of most homes. If your parent lived in an apartment before, this step may be simple. If they had a house with multiple bedrooms, you\u2019ll have a significant task ahead of you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your parents have a few main options for what to do with all their\u00a0belongings:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Choose which items are the most important to hang on to and keep with them in\u00a0senior living<\/b>. Recognize that they may have a very hard time narrowing down the amount to what will actually fit and you\u2019ll probably need to help with that.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Decide what to give away to family members.<\/b>\u00a0Chances are, your parents were already planning to give some of the family furniture and heirlooms to specific loved ones. They can do some of that gifting now, so items stay in the family or with friends.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Figure out what can be kept in storage or held onto by family members<\/b>. Maybe you have family members with a big garage or storage space that some items can go into. In that case, it may be a little easier for your parents to part with things they know won\u2019t fit in\u00a0senior living, but that they won\u2019t have to be giving up forever.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Decide what you can sell<\/b>. There are probably a number of belongings in the mix that you can put on Craigslist or\u00a0eBay\u00a0to sell. Senior living can be costly, so making some money off of the furniture and other items you no longer need before the move can be a big help.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Choose items to donate to charity<\/b>. Many of the things you no longer need, someone else can really benefit from. Look into local charities that may want some of the items you\u2019re giving up. Goodwill will usually come and do a pick up if you have a lot of items to give, so it can take some of the work off your plate as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Once your parents have whittled their belongings down to the things they need most, it\u2019s time to put the move in motion.<\/span><\/p>\n
