It\u2019s a great opportunity for your loved ones to pause and look at their current lifestyle. They can determine how to enrich their lives to make it better. It\u2019s also a great time for caregivers to evaluate what has been working well and what can be improved upon to strengthen health and happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many set New Years resolutions, the vast majority of people fail to follow through with them. According to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, less than 10% of people are successful in achieving their resolutions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is that? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statisticbrain.com\/new-years-resolution-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\">last year\u2019s most common New Years resolutions<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lose Weight <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Organized<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend Less, Save More<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enjoy Life to the Fullest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay Fit and Healthy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn Something Exciting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quit Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help Others in their Dreams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall in Love<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spend More Time with Family<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these are exciting and positive resolutions, they are very broad and lofty goals; they can certainly be overwhelming and discouraging if they are not approached in the right manner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to make New Years resolutions that <em>stick<\/em> is to make SMART goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Specific \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Be specific vs. general. Try to answer the questions Who, What, When, Where and Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Measurable \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Success should be tracked and measured with a number\/metric. How much? How many?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><b>Attainable \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make an achievable goal and create a vision with a positive attitude that leads to success.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Realistic \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure a goal is achievable based on physical, mental and\/or emotional wellbeing and ability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Timely \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put a timeline to a goal. How frequent? How often? By what date?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And most importantly, remember: New Years resolutions do not have to be so epic and life changing that they attempt to solve one\u2019s biggest problems. Often times, when one tries to take on too much too fast, the results are not as positive. A better approach is to take small positive steps forward that will lead to considerable and sustainable change in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, rather than creating a large, broad goal such as \u201cget healthier,\u201d it\u2019s more productive to create mini goals that lead to a healthier and happier life. Here is just one example of a mini goal. Note the \u201cSMART\u201d structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goal<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Floss teeth a minimum of two times a day to improve health and hygiene because flossing helps prevent disease and tooth decay. Floss in the bathroom every morning (7AM) and in the evening before bed (9PM). Measure success based on 6-month dental cleaning reports\/feedback. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make 2016 your best year yet by setting \u201cSMART\u201d resolutions that lead to big success!
