Here&#8217;s a proposed list of Resident Rights I encourage you to follow\u00a0in your community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents in an in-patient nursing setting are entitled to the following:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Medical Care<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To retain the services of a physician of their own choosing<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have their medical condition explained to them in clear and concise language and to their understanding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To participate in their own care plan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To refuse medications and treatments after being informed of its consequences<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To refuse participation in experimental drugs and treatments<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Freedom of Abuse &amp; Restraints<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom from all forms of abuse, whether verbal or physical<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom from chemical and physical restraints unless ordered by a physician for brief periods and specific applications (to protect from injury)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Physical and Personal Environment<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To live in a safe and comfortable environment<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be treated gently and with dignity and courtesy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To wear personal clothes and keep personal effects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To wear appropriate and not ill fitting clothes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have personal effects of value properly secured at the expense of the facility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Finances<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To manage their own finances or to appoint a suitable proxy<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive timely and written statements from the facility regarding all bills for provided services<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive a quarterly written report and accounting of all of their funds and personal effects stored at the facility for safekeeping<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have daily access upon request and during reasonable hours, to all monies and property deposited with the facility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Visits and Activities<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To stay out of bed at their own will and discretion<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To meet with visitors of their own choosing between 8am and 8pm daily<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To take part in all activities and initiatives, including religious groups and services<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To leave the nursing facility during the day<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To refuse to perform services for the nursing home<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To request visits from religious groups and providers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To not be subjected to any forms of discrimination based upon sex, ethnicity, religion, or nationality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To organize and participate in a Resident Council that presents concerns to Administration for amelioration and problem solving<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Privacy and Confidentiality<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have physical space and privacy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have ample opportunity for private intimate contact and interaction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have access to all personal information<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To expect the facility to adhere to all HIPAA rules and regulations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Discharges and Transfers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be notified in advance of any changes to their room or roommate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive assistance with all <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/what-are-adls\/\" target=\"_blank\">activities of daily living (ADL\u2019s)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be transferred and\/or discharged only in cases of medical emergency, to protect their personal welfare or that of the other residents, for non payment, or to comply with advanced directives<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive a 30 day prior written notice when the facility is looking to discharge for any of the aforementioned reasons<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mail and Telephone<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive and send private communications via mail with the proper expectation that these letters will not be tampered with<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have private access to telephone within their living environment, whether at their expense or that of the facility<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Protection of Rights<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be given a written statement from the nursing home regarding all changes in regulations and protocol involving their rights and the facilities&#8217; responsibility to them (copies should concurrently be supplied to families and staff)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To retain and exercise all of their constitutional and civil rights and to be encouraged by the facility to do so<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the final analysis, by adhering to the rights of the resident, the facility will ensure a
