If your spouse was a veteran, their service to the country entitles you both to some benefits that can help, even if your husband or wife is no longer with us. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1. Aid and Attendance Benefit<\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.veteranaid.org\/apply.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aid &amp; Attendance Benefit<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is both one of the most valuable benefits available to veterans and their spouses and one of the most underutilized. Many veterans\u2019 spouses that could be taking advantage of the benefit don\u2019t even know it exists. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A surviving spouse can qualify for up to <strong>$1,149 a month<\/strong> to help cover the cost of services like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2019\/07\/assisted-living-vs-home-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">assisted living or in-home care<\/a><\/strong>, or up to <strong>$2,120 a month<\/strong> if both you and your spouse qualify. Think of how much easier that would make affording those monthly assisted living bills. This benefit is only available for those who need daily assistance with tasks like getting dressed, bathing, and eating meals, but the veterans\u2019 spouses in that category are often those that need the most financial help. Find out if you&#8217;re eligible with this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veteranaid.org\/aid-and-attendance-eligibility.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">short 1-minute questionnaire<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2. CHAMPVA<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.va.gov\/purchasedcare\/programs\/dependents\/champva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> (CHAMPVA)<\/strong> covers the cost of most health care services and supplies that the program deems necessary. To be eligible for CHAMPVA, you must be the spouse of a veteran who was disabled by a service-related injury or killed in the line of duty. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can be enrolled in either TRICARE or CHAMPVA, but not both, so if you\u2019re currently using TRICARE and most of your needs are covered, then CHAMPVA\u2019s not for you. If you think you may qualify though and you\u2019re in need of help with health care costs, look into CHAMPVA to see if it\u2019s the best choice for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>3. Tax Breaks<\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military families qualify for a number of tax breaks that can be a big help to you come tax time, if you know to take advantage of them. Military spouses can benefit when moving and selling their home, get retirement perks, and enjoy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/inet\/pages\/advice-finances-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other benefits\u00a0exclusive to military families<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can also receive free tax help at your nearest base through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Individuals\/Free-Tax-Return-Preparation-for-You-by-Volunteers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re a military spouse, it\u2019s worth working with someone familiar with all the benefits military families qualify for when you file your tax returns, so you don\u2019t miss out.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<h2>4. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)<\/h2>\n<p><b><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/COMPENSATION\/types-dependency_and_indemnity.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a benefit available to spouses of veterans who died in active duty or due to injuries obtained while on active duty. If that\u2019s your situation, you could be eligible for an extra <strong>$1,233 per month<\/strong> to help you cover your costs, and the monthly rate will go up if you have additional dependents.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2>5. Military Aid Societies<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military Aid Societies were developed to help veterans and their families in times of financial distress. <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Air Force Aid Society<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmcrs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><strong>Army Emergency Relief<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all exist to help service members and their families with financial counseling, loans, and grants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a veteran\u2019s spouse isn\u2019t easy. The service provided by your spouse was noble, but it came at a cost for you and the rest of your family too.
