Out-of-pocket expenses, time away from work, and lost time to build up retirement savings can put caregivers in a financial bind. There are programs, though, that allow family members to get paid for their caregiving labor\u2014if the senior being cared for qualifies, if the caregiver meets program requirements, and if you live in an area that has such a program with available spots. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Paid family caregiving options for Medicaid recipients<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost every state participates in a Medicaid-funded program allowing qualified seniors to pay family members for care. The federal term for these programs is <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/Medicaid-CHIP-Program-Information\/By-Topics\/Delivery-Systems\/Self-Directed-Services.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Self Directed Services<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Programs in each state have their own names and guidelines. For example: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <strong>California<\/strong>, Medi-Cal eligible seniors may qualify for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdss.ca.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services)<\/a><\/strong>, which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for in-home care by family members, neighbors, or professional caregivers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <strong>New York State<\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnylc.com\/health\/entry\/40\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medicaid Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program<\/a><\/strong> allows some family <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including sons and daughters in law, to be paid with program funds for family caregiving.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <strong>Oklahoma<\/strong>, the program is called <strong>CD-PASS (Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Services and Supports)<\/strong> and is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Medicaid Advantage participants in selected counties only.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <strong>Texas<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dads.state.tx.us\/services\/faqs-fact\/phc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Primary Home Care<\/a><\/strong> offers a consumer-directed option for home care <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">services<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Medicaid-eligible recipients.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be a wait list for these programs, and there may be other state programs available to you that don\u2019t depend on Medicaid eligibility. To explore all the options, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longtermcarelink.net\/eldercare\/ref_state_aging_services.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact your state\u2019s department of aging or department of health<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Paid family caregiving options for veterans<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterans who qualify for the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.veteranaid.org\/apply.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aid and Attendance Pension<\/a><\/strong> receive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pay for home care or assistance in a care facility, and that does include family members giving care at home. As with self-directed Medicaid programs and with paying out of pocket (discussed below), the senior who receives the benefit pays the family caregiver a regular paycheck, and the caregiver is required to report this income for tax purposes. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Other paid family caregiving options<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For non-veterans and seniors whose income and assets are too high to qualify for Medicaid, there are some do-it-yourself options. Seniors who hold a long-term care insurance policy may be able to use it to pay a relative for care. But, according to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaltci.org\/news\/long-term-care-insurance-news\/long-term-care-insurance-may-pay-family-caregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance<\/a><\/strong>, not all policies offer this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019ll need to speak with the agent who sold the policy in order to find out it family care is covered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other option, for seniors who have enough savings to do so, is to simply pay your adult child or other caregiving family member out of your own money. If you go this route, experts advise that you keep meticulous records, make sure everything is reported to the IRS, and pay within the market range for home care services in your area. (Overpaying a family member can make it look as if you are trying to \u201cspend down\u201d your assets quickly, and that could disqualify you from Medicaid eligibility in the future.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, check with your local agency on aging to see if there are other programs in your area.
