It\u2019s a day dedicated to bringing the world together for one life-changing mission: to eradicate hunger in our lifetime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldfooddayusa.org\/what-is-wfd\" target=\"_blank\">World Food Day USA<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00a0805 million people, or one in nine worldwide, live with chronic hunger:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>60%<\/strong> of the hungry in the world are <strong>women<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost <em>5 million children<\/em> under the age of 5 <strong>die<\/strong> of malnutrition-related causes <strong>every year<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4 in 10 children<\/strong> in poor countries are <em>malnourished<\/em>, leading to severe health issues<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond human suffering, the <em>global economic cost<\/em> due to malnutrition is the equivalent of<strong> $3.5 trillion a year<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S. alone, <strong>one in seven Americans (14.3%)<\/strong> does not have enough to eat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are alarming and sobering statistics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are numerous ways to contribute to this important mission. And, as an added bonus, contributions to this cause (or any other kind-oriented action) can be personally beneficial via increased happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How Being Kind Can Make You Happier<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent Huff Post article titled \u201c<\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/kindness-life-lessons_560eeab2e4b0af3706e0d728\" target=\"_blank\">Three Strategies for Bringing More Kindness in Your Life<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Juliana Breines, Ph.D. writes, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to increase our own happiness is to do things that make other people happy. In countless studies<\/span><\/i><b><i>, kindness and generosity have been linked to greater life satisfaction, stronger\u00a0relationships and better\u00a0mental\u00a0and\u00a0physical health\u2014generous people even\u00a0live longer.<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Breines also writes how kindness can become a powerful habit:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIntentionally practicing kindness in our everyday lives, even on days when we\u2019re not in a particularly generous mood, can go a long way toward turning kindness into a habit. That\u2019s largely because of the way kindness breeds happiness: The good feelings serve to reinforce our kind acts and make us more likely to want to perform them in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>How You Can Take Action To End Hunger<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Food Day is one way you and your loved ones can spread kindness and make a difference in peoples\u2019 lives, while also making a positive difference on a personal level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how can you and your loved ones give back to the hungry and increase happiness?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attend, participate or contribute in <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldfooddayusa.org\/events\" target=\"_blank\">World Food Day events<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as hunger walks, banquets and\/or food drives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donate or find volunteer opportunities via hunger\/food-focused non-profit organizations such as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/what-is-meals-on-wheels\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meals on Wheels<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heifer International<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FarmAid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeding America<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a local level, volunteer at your local food bank and\/or support local family farms who supply food to your community.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these are just a few suggestions, you can also use this day as a bonding experience with your loved ones to come up with shared ideas on how to play a role in ending hunger and increasing happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindness can feed the hungry and the soul\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Food Day: A Day to Be Kind and Increase Happiness Next Friday,\u00a0October 16th,\u00a0is World Food Day.
