We hear our health care providers talk about it. We know we should watch it. But what is it? And is it all that important? Cholesterol is part of the food we eat and it is naturally found in the cells of your bodies. Your liver <\/span><span id=\"E34\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">creates<\/span><span id=\"E35\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> all the cholesterol the body needs to function well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E36\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E37\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Cholesterol is a substance similar to fat, but waxy. It travels through your body in your bloodstream but doesn\u2019t mix with the watery blood, <\/span><span id=\"E38\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">in the same way<\/span><span id=\"E39\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">\u00a0that oil and water don\u2019t mix. T<\/span><span id=\"E40\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">here are t<\/span><span id=\"E41\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">wo <\/span><span id=\"E42\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">different <\/span><span id=\"E43\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">kinds of lipoproteins <\/span><span id=\"E44\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">that bring<\/span><span id=\"E45\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> cholesterol through your bloodstream. Healthy <\/span><span id=\"E46\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">rates<\/span><span id=\"E47\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> of <\/span><span id=\"E48\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">these lipoproteins <\/span><span id=\"E49\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are important. <em>Lipoproteins<\/em> are the \u201cL\u201d in HDL and LDL.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\">Good vs. Bad Cholesterol<\/h2>\n<p id=\"E50\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E51\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">There are two different types of cholesterol. <em>High-density lipoproteins<\/em> (HDL) <\/span><span id=\"E53\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">is<\/span><span id=\"E55\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> often called \u201cgood cholesterol.\u201d It carries cholesterol away from your cells to the <\/span><span id=\"E57\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">liver which<\/span><span id=\"E59\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> removes it from the body. HDL actually helps remove cholesterol from your artery walls where it can build up as plaque. So, you want high-density lipoprotein levels (HDL) to be fairly high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E60\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E61\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"><em>Low-density lipoproteins<\/em> (LDL) <\/span><span id=\"E62\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are tasked with bringing<\/span><span id=\"E63\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> cholesterol to the cells, including the <\/span><span id=\"E65\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">arteries which<\/span><span id=\"E67\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E68\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">delivers<\/span><span id=\"E69\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> blood to the heart. <\/span><span id=\"E70\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> Because <\/span><span id=\"E71\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">LDL cholesterol <\/span><span id=\"E72\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">may cause plaque build up on the walls of your arteries it <\/span><span id=\"E73\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">is often called \u201cbad cholesterol<\/span><span id=\"E74\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E75\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">\u201d This is what makes cholesterol dangerous to your health. It can cause you to be at risk for such serious health problems as heart attack and stroke. So, you want low-density lipoproteins (HDL) to be low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E76\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E77\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">High blood cholesterol results from the interaction betw<\/span><span id=\"E80\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">een how we eat, live and how our bodies respond to those choices. Atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and angina are possible if high blood cholesterol goes unchecked.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"E81\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E82\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">What can you do to have a healthy cholesterol reading?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E82\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">First, look at <\/span><span id=\"E83\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">the foods that<\/span><span id=\"E84\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> you<\/span><span id=\"E85\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> are<\/span><span id=\"E86\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> eat<\/span><span id=\"E87\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">ing<\/span><span id=\"E88\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. There is LDL cholesterol in foods that come from animal sources: cheese, egg yolks, butter, <\/span><span id=\"E90\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">meat<\/span><span id=\"E92\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. Read labels before you buy, looking for trans fats or saturated fats (processed meat such as sausages, burgers and salami, pastry, fatty or fried foods among others). Cut back on these because you want LDL to be low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E93\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E94\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Add foods high in HDL to your daily diet: olives; nuts; seeds; canola, sunflower or safflower oil; oily fish; lean meats and lean poultry. Ask your healthcare provider for diet suggestions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E95\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E96\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> Next, go check your weight. Although not always the case, if you are<\/span><span id=\"E97\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> overweight <\/span><span id=\"E98\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">you may see an increase in <\/span><span id=\"E99\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">your LDL level<\/span><span id=\"E100\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E101\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet and cut back on <\/span><span id=\"E102\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">processed <\/span><span id=\"E103\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">bakery goods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E104\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E105\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Finally, get active. Lack of regular exercise can cause weight gain, which in turn raises your LDL cholesterol level. <a title=\"Exercises for Seniors\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/tips-for-staying-active-in-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Regular<\/a><\/span><a title=\"Exercises for Seniors\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senioradvisor.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/tips-for-staying-active-in-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E107\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> and on-going<\/span><span id=\"E108\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> exercise<\/span><span id=\"E109\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">s<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E110\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> can help you<\/span><span id=\"E111\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> get back on track to healthy weight levels and enable you to<\/span><span id=\"E112\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> lower your LDL level. Also, it helps raise your HDL level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E113\" class=\"qowt-stl-normal0\"><span id=\"E114\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">It is hard to detect h<\/span><span id=\"E115\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">igh blood cholesterol <\/span><span id=\"E116\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">because it does not show any causes or symptoms which can be misleading to <\/span><span id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">many people <\/span><span id=\"E118\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">may not even be aware of <\/span><span id=\"E119\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">it. Only a blood test can identify your cholesterol levels.
