The holiday season is a great time to get involved in your local community. One of the most rewarding experiences of the holiday season is volunteering for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year and families across America make a special effort to be with their loved ones during this time. But it\u2019s also a pretty lonely time for some of us who do not have family nearby or simply can\u2019t put together a Thanksgiving meal. <\/p>\n

Volunteering for Thanksgiving is a great way to beat the loneliness that the holidays can bring. When you are with others in an environment to serve, your focus becomes outward-focused instead of inward-focused. Volunteering for Thanksgiving is a great way to connect with others as well.<\/p>\n

The best places to volunteer for Thanksgiving are:<\/p>\n

1.\tMeals on Wheels.<\/h3>\n

There is no shortage of volunteer opportunities here for Thanksgiving. From putting meals together to doing a special Thanksgiving route, Meals on Wheels has streamlined the process of volunteering so they can utilize the best of your volunteer time in the capacity that is suited towards your ability. <\/p>\n

To volunteer with Meals on Wheels<\/span><\/a>, visit their website and click on the \u201cTake Action\u201d button on the lower right hand screen. It will direct you to a few simple steps to register and you\u2019re all set! Alternatively, you can contact the local Meals on Wheels in your area via phone call to get more information on how to volunteer with them.<\/p>\n

2.\tSalvation Army<\/h3>\n

Salvation Army has one of the best Thanksgiving programs around. Each Thanksgiving event and activity is localized to the needs of the community. Some areas do Thanksgiving Baskets while others serve up hot meals. Check with your local Salvation Army to see what is going on. You\u2019ll be glad you served with them.<\/p>\n

3.\tLocal community church<\/h3>\n

Churches are always reaching out to the local community and around this time of the year, they typically ramp up their efforts. Some churches encourage their members to bring in extra canned goods while other churches direct members to contribute their time during the community Thanksgiving event. If your local church does not have a scheduled Thanksgiving volunteer effort, ask your pastor which churches he thinks could benefit from the extra set of hands. <\/p>\n

4.\tLocal non-profit organization<\/h3>\n

Some non-profit organizations exist only for this one event once a year. As such, these organizations are highly organized and know how to make the best possible use of time by encouraging volunteers to also bring a hot dish to share, warm blankets to give to the homeless, and extra coats as well.<\/p>\n

5.\tLocal Turkey Trots or Parades in your area<\/h3>\n

My favorite place to volunteer during Thanksgiving are with the Local Turkey Trots and Parades. You really get a feel for the vibrancy of the community that you live in and the whole community comes out to celebrate the beginning season of the holidays. Ask a friend about a local Turkey Trot or Parade in your area if you need ideas; they are sure to know of at least one big Thanksgiving event. Then contact the host or view their website to see how you can help.<\/p>\n
