Houston is home to a huge Southern Baptist population \u2014 in fact, according to Baptist author and speaker Thom Rainer, the Houston metro area is home to four of the 10 largest congregations in the Southern Baptist Convention, including the two largest in the nation, Second Baptist Church and Woodlands Church.<\/p>\n

Houston is also home to the award-winning Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, which started as the city\u2019s Baptist Sanitarium in 1907 and now consists of a dozen hospitals, senior living services, and home health care across the metro area. Seniors seeking Southern Baptist community and care have lots of options around the city.<\/p>\n

Baptist-affiliated senior communities in Houston<\/h2>\n

Parkway Place<\/span><\/a><\/strong> in west Houston is a Buckner senior community that offers a continuum of care options. Independent living is available without an entrance fee, and assisted living offers round-the-clock help for those who need a little assistance with everyday tasks. Parkway Place\u2019s memory care community, The Harbor, features private baths, a secure outdoor area, pet therapy, and specially trained staff. The Haven is Parkway Place\u2019s skilled nursing facility, with room for 60 patients who need short- or long-term care.<\/p>\n

University Place senior community<\/span><\/a><\/strong> is run by the Memorial Hermann system and is part of the Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital campus. Southwest has a special focus on senior health, making University Place an especially convenient home for seniors who need regular care. University Place residents also have free access to the 80,000 square-foot Bradshaw Fitness Center at Houston Baptist University, which is less than a mile away. University Place, like Parkway Place, offers a variety of care levels from independent living to skilled nursing.<\/p>\n

A Baptist tradition of home health care services in Houston<\/h2>\n

In addition to its 12 area hospitals, Memorial Hermann operates Medicare-certified senior home care services in Houston<\/span><\/a><\/strong>. Licensed home care staffers are available to provide short-term rehabilitative care, ongoing home nursing care, home respiratory care, infusion therapy, and many other clinical services.<\/p>\n

Memorial Hermann Home Care also runs specialty programs for patients who need in-home behavioral and mental health services, in-home therapy and safety assessments for seniors with impaired vision, and team home care and patient education for seniors with heart disease.<\/p>\n

Lots of Baptist fellowship options in Houston<\/h2>\n

In a city with close to 140 Southern Baptist congregations, seniors can choose among churches large and small, from mega-churches with tens of thousands of members to smaller neighborhood congregations and those focused on the needs of particular immigrant and ethnic groups. Many Houston-area Baptist churches offer services in languages other than English, including Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean.<\/p>\n

Many of the larger churches have extensive programs for senior members. For example, Champion Forest Baptist Church, which has campuses in north Houston and in the suburbs of Spring and Conroe, offers three senior ministries sorted by age, with different study topics for each stage of life.
