Help with aging in place<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019d prefer to stay in your own home but need a little help and some social time, there are 3 San Diego resources to contact first.<\/p>\n

1. The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center<\/strong> hosts senior clubs centered on topics from poker and mah jongg to doubles tennis. LFJCC also sponsors with fitness, art, and technology classes and special holiday and social events for seniors. And if you\u2019re new to Medicare and need a little guidance, the community center offers free Medicare counseling once a month to help you make the most of your benefits. Free legal counseling is also offered monthly.<\/p>\n

2. On the Go<\/strong> is the San Diego Jewish community\u2019s senior transportation service for everything from rides to your synagogue for High Holy Days services to group field trips to fun destinations around the city. Book your rides in advance and skip the hassle of driving and parking.<\/p>\n

3. Jewish Family Service of San Diego<\/strong> provides a full slate of free and low-cost help for seniors, such as care counseling, fun social programs, bereavement help, hot kosher meal delivery, and adult education classes at 4 area social and wellness centers.<\/p>\n

Keeping up with the news<\/h2>\n

The San Diego Jewish Journal reports on local events, community resources, and state, national, and international news that\u2019s relevant to the Jewish community. Check out the SJDD calendar to find social, educational, and spiritual events around town. The paper\u2019s resources section has a comprehensive list of services for seniors, lists of kosher eateries and shops, and congregations in and around San Diego. The Journal is available online and in print.<\/p>\n

Finding the right place<\/h2>\n

Seacrest Village<\/span><\/a><\/strong> has provided assisted living and nursing home services to the Jewish community for 70 years. Today Seacrest Village has two campuses. The main campus in Encinitas provides luxurious independent and assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. Residents can work out in the modern Ottenstein Vitality Center and attend services at Seacrest\u2019s synagogue.<\/p>\n

Seniors living at Seacrest Village can also make the most of Encinitas\u2019 amenities, such as Moonlight Beach, the San Diego Botanic Garden, great shopping and dining, and easy access to Scripps Memorial Hospital and local doctors.<\/p>\n

In Rancho Bernardo, Seacrest operates a recently renovated independent living community that gives residents beautiful views of the hills and time-saving services such as transportation, housekeeping, and linen service.<\/p>\n

The Jewish Federation of San Diego County has launched a new Aging in Community senior program this year in partnership with several other local Jewish organizations. Aging in Community is studying the services the growing senior population will need, and over the next several years the program plans to provide an expanding array of volunteer services, more housing choices, and financial help for needy seniors.<\/p>\n
