Dallas is all about big hair, big parties, and a big LGBT community. With the country\u2019s 6th-largest LGBT population, the Big D offers two gay-friendly neighborhoods, a thriving GLBT Chamber of Commerce, plenty of places to meet friends and make friends, and one of the nation\u2019s biggest LBGT community centers.<\/p>\n

Welcome to the neighborhood<\/h2>\n

The upscale Oak Lawn area of Dallas is the city\u2019s original \u201cgayborhood.\u201d LGBT clubs line Cedar Springs Road, along with restaurants and boutiques. Along with the legendary J.R.\u2019s and Sue Ellen\u2019s, the Cedar Springs nightlife scene offers something for everyone, like the western-themed Round-up Saloon, Cuban-style dinner and dancing at Havana Lounge, Woody\u2019s Sports Bar, and Alexandre\u2019s cabaret and karaoke lounge.<\/p>\n

Just north of the Oak Lawn neighborhood, Meadowstone Place<\/span><\/a><\/strong> offers easy, pet-friendly independent living, with fine dining, housekeeping services, and transportation so residents can get out without the hassle of driving and parking.<\/p>\n

Southwest of downtown in the Oak Cliff area, the Bishop Arts District bills itself as \u201cDallas\u2019 Most Independent Neighborhood.\u201d The district is home to dozens of independently owned shops, eateries, clubs, and galleries to give visitors and residents an authentic Big D experience. And Bishop likes to party. From Mardi Gras to Bastille Day to Christmas, the area plays host to street festivals and bazaars throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The Meridian at Kessler<\/span><\/a><\/strong> senior apartment complex is located just west of the Bishop Arts District. The Meridian offers free transportation for errands and outings, and has plenty of parking for residents, too.<\/p>\n

A busy social calendar<\/h2>\n

The LGBT festivities aren\u2019t limited to Oak Lawn and the Bishop Arts District. Dallas Pride, a group run by the Dallas Tavern Guild, sponsors a number of Pride Week events every year, such as Gay Day at Six Flags Arlington, dance contests, and the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade.<\/p>\n

During the rest of the year, Dallas Pride events include black-tie fundraiser dinners for the Human Rights Campaign, HIV fundraising walks, and the annual Voice of Pride talent competition. For seniors who are interested in business, the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce hosts regular events like speakers, lunches, and the annual GLBT Community and Business Expo.<\/p>\n

A close-knit community<\/h2>\n

Resource Dallas is the biggest social service group for LGBT people in North Texas, and its programs reach tens of thousands of Texans every year. Seniors can get involved through Resource Dallas\u2019 volunteer opportunities. And there are Resource Dallas events and services for seniors, too, through its Gray Pride program. From the \u201cSenior Prom\u201d to community education classes and lunches at the Gray Pride Caf\u00e9, there\u2019s always something to do and something new to learn.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a thriving LGBT spiritual community in Dallas, too. The Cathedral of Hope, a United Church of Christ affiliate, is the biggest LGBT church in the world, with some 30,000 members who participate in charity and social-justice events year-round.<\/p>\n
