Dangerous travel conditions like ice and snow\u00a0can also keep seniors from shopping and socializing outside of the home and it can keep visitors from being able to reach them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In fact, isolation brings with it a number of mental and physical health risks for aging adults.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/blog\/2-25-14-preventing-senior-isolation-in-winter\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/blog\/2-25-14-preventing-senior-isolation-in-winter\/\">isolation and loneliness<\/a>\u00a0have been associated with increased mortality in seniors, an increased risk of higher blood pressure and long-term illnesses. Isolated seniors are also at higher risk of elder abuse, without loved ones to look in on them now and then.<\/p>\n<p>The holidays are prime time for visiting,\u00a0which helps keep senior isolation in check.<\/p>\n<h2>Bringing Holiday Cheer to Parents and Senior Loved Ones<\/h2>\n<p>Besides the many events organized by senior living communities, there are numerous ways to share the holiday spirit with senior loved ones in assisted living.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a handful of ideas for activities that families can share as a group:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attend a performance of holiday-themed dance or music, such as \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Create a family\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/planning-and-advice\/articles\/leaving-a-legacy\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/senior-care-resources\/articles\/leaving-a-legacy\">scrapbook with mementos and photos<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For loved ones that live far away, organize a virtual visit over FaceTime or Skype<\/li>\n<li>Have a cookie-baking and decorating party<\/li>\n<li>Organize an informal Christmas carol sing-along<\/li>\n<li>Throw a holiday-card party: assign everyone a task, such as decorating cards with stickers, stuffing envelopes or writing out addresses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Celebrating the Holidays With Seniors in Assisted Living<\/h2>\n<p>Senior living communities provide a variety of organized and planned activities for the holidays and most, if not all, of these activities are family-friendly, welcoming loved ones of all ages for festivities, food and fun.<\/p>\n<p>We contacted several of our partner communities and these are just a sampling of the holiday events they have in store:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Elmcroft\">Elmcroft<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/assisted-living\/tennessee\/hendersonville\">Hendersonville, Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0really got into the holiday spirit this year during their open house, which featured \u201cheavy hors-d&#8217;oeuvres\u201d as well as\u00a0<strong>live music, family pictures with Santa and a resident\u2019s art exhibit<\/strong>. They also invite local schools to perform holiday programs and caroling throughout December.<\/li>\n<li><span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Elmcroft\">Elmcroft<\/span>\u00a0of Halls in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/assisted-living\/tennessee\/knoxville\">Knoxville, Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0held a\u00a0<strong>Festival of Wreaths<\/strong>\u00a0earlier in December, which featured wine and hors-d&#8217;oeuvres, milk and cookies, and a silent auction of holiday wreaths to benefit the local Alzheimer\u2019s Association.<\/li>\n<li><span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Elmcroft\">Elmcroft<\/span>\u00a0of Twin Hills, also in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/assisted-living\/tennessee\">Tennessee<\/a>, is hosting a\u00a0<strong>Christmas Celebration breakfast<\/strong>\u00a0on December\u00a0<span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"20th\">20<\/span>\u00a0with plenty of fun for the grandkids, including pony rides and photos with Santa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Santa also visited senior living<\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a0<span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Elmcroft\">Elmcroft<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/assisted-living\/tennessee\/knoxville\">West Knoxville, Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0on December\u00a0<span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"6th\">6<\/span>\u00a0for a breakfast of French toast sticks, muffins and doughnuts.<\/li>\n<li>Sunrise at River Road in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/assisted-living\/arizona\/tucson\">Tucson, Arizona<\/a>, holds an\u00a0<strong>annual tree lighting as well as a menorah lighting<\/strong>, with family, residents and staff all invited to share a hot toddy and enjoy the celebration. They\u2019re also holding a masquerade open house on New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Individual establishments may choose to celebrate a variety of holidays in an assortment of ways, but what all these events have in common is that they put the\u00a0community<em>\u00a0<\/em>in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/planning-and-advice\/articles\/senior-communities\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.aplaceformom.com\/senior-care-resources\/articles\/senior-communities\">senior living<\/a>\u00a0community\u201d \u2014 encouraging families and the general public to mingle and socialize with elders and one another \u2014 which is what the holiday spirit is really about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrating the Holidays With Seniors in Assisted Living Even when our parents or senior loved ones don\u2019t live at home with us, we can still bring the joys of the season to them\u00a0with\u00a0holiday celebrations and visits.
