The Semantics of Senior Living<\/h1>\n

Now that baby boomers are of retirement age, the United States is seeing increased demand for healthcare provisions and services.\"The<\/p>\n

With increased care<\/a>\u00a0comes new terminology that more accurately depicts today\u2019s versatile senior care and senior living options. Learn more about the evolution and semantics of senior living.<\/p>\n

The Evolution of Senior Living<\/h2>\n

Today\u2019s senior care terminology promotes not only dignity for aging baby boomers, but also represents how senior living options have changed over the years.<\/p>\n

The terms \u201cnursing homes\u201d and \u201cold folks homes\u201d\u00a0used to have a stigma of institutional, white-walled settings we\u2019re scared to visit. This no longer represents the care options of today, however, as assisted and independent living communities\u00a0offer a plethora of appealing amenities and socialization for residents and seniors.<\/p>\n

Argentum<\/a>, formerly known as the Assisted Living Federation of America, couldn\u2019t have said it better:<\/p>\n

\u201cAs assisted and senior living evolves to meet the needs of the baby boomer generation, we must continue to refine philosophy and discussion of our service venue. In order to accomplish this task it is essential assisted living vocabulary reinforces choice, dignity and independence. The words we speak convey our philosophy and direct our actions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So how have senior living terms changed?<\/p>\n

  1. \u201cAdmission\u201d and \u201cDischarge\u201d\u00a0are now:\u00a0Move-In and Move-Out<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cAssisted Living Facility\u201d is now:\u00a0Assisted Living Community\/Communities, House or Residence<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cBed\u201d or \u201cUnit\u201d\u00a0is now:\u00a0Apartment,\u00a0Room or Suite<\/strong><\/li>\n
  4. \u201cElderly\u201d\u00a0is now:\u00a0Elder<\/strong><\/li>\n
  5. \u201cLong-Term Care\u201d\u00a0is now:\u00a0Senior Living<\/strong><\/li>\n
  6. \u201cPatient\u201d\u00a0is now:\u00a0Resident<\/strong><\/li>\n
  7. \u201cTour\u201d\u00a0is now:\u00a0Visit<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
