This fall, people will take to the streets in cities and towns across the US to raise money for Alzheimer’s research and family support. In addition to independent state and city groups, the national Alzheimer’s Association is coordinating more than 600 local\u00a0Walks to End Alzheimer’s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0before the end of 2017. Right now in the US, more than 5 million people live with Alzheimer’s, and that number is increasing at the rate of one new patient every 66 seconds, according the Alzheimer’s Association figures. With so many Americans living with a disease that affects their memory, sense of place, sense of self, and cognitive abilities, the ripple effects touch us all in some way.<\/p>\n

How Alzheimer’s disease affects us all<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Family members who care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s at home face\u00a0more stress and poorer health than caregivers for people with non-dementia conditions. Caregivers may also have to choose between paid work and unpaid caregiving, which can interfere with their careers and their ability to save for retirement and their own eventual senior care needs. Burnout is a real risk, which is why the\u00a0Centers for Disease Control recently called for more support\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>and education for Alzheimer’s family caregivers.<\/p>\n

Alzheimer’s also affects our economy in ways that are hard to imagine. Last year,\u00a0according to the Alzheimer’s Association, patient treatments and care cost $259 billion<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the US alone. And 16 million unpaid family caregivers contributed $230 billion worth of care to their loved ones on their own time, without compensation.<\/p>\n

How the Walk to End Alzheimer’s helps<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Funds raised in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s support\u00a0Alzheimer’s Association’s programs<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that help people with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and their families. Their programs include round-the-clock telephone resources, online message boards, and peer support groups that meet regularly in cities around the country. On the research front, the Alzheimer’s Association helps fund the scientific search for better treatments, more refined diagnostic tools and processes, and treatment trials. And to make sure that the public and lawmakers keep the needs of Alzheimer’s patients and families in mind, the Alzheimer’s Association lobbies in Washington and trains advocates for grassroots actions.<\/p>\n
